In its continuing effort to provide free connectivity, Smart Communications has teamed up with the University of the Philippines to bring free Wi-Fi hotspots in all of the latter’s campuses nationwide.

UP president Alfredo E. Pascual and Smart’s chief wireless advisor Orlando B. Vea recently signed a memorandum of agreement in which the telecom company will supply free Internet connectivity to constituents of the UP System.

With the agreement in place, anyone inside the campus can connect to the hotspots and access whitelisted websites for free. Websites excluded in the whitelist are still accessible for 30 minutes per day. The usual rates will then be charged for excess data usage.

So it’s not exactly a no-limit access to the Internet, but this is nevertheless an invaluable tool to students and the UP community. It not only helps unify the institutions belonging to the UP system but also help foster collaborative learning within said community.

Outside UP campuses, Smart subscribers can also avail of 30MB worth of Internet data per day by texting FREE to 9999. Smart also provides its users with unlimited access to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites.
