Telegram, a popular instant messaging app, could soon be banned in the Philippines.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is studying the possibility of banning Telegram in the Philippines.

DICT cited the platform being used to distribute pornography and facilitate gambling operations as a reason.

In an interview, DICT Secretary Henry Aguda said that they are struggling to coordinate with Telegram developers to enforce local regulations on the platform.

Aguda stressed that certain issues like online sexual exploitation and child abuse are “non-negotiable”, and if such content continues to be spread on any platform, the government will not think twice in blocking them in the country.
