Every annual sports release faces the same opening question: what did the developers actually change? On the surface, everything often look similar to last year’s release, with improvements and changes hidden underneath.

NBA 2K27 officially came out this September on PS5, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It’s the first 2K to drop last generation consoles completely, which means plenty of gamers who haven’t upgraded yet are left out.

This year, Victor Wembanyama is on the cover of the standard edition, Caitlin Clark fronts the Deluxe, and the Ultra Edition honors Derrick Rose’s iconic career.

On the court, this is the most complete basketball simulation Visual Concepts and 2K has ever produced. Everything built around it is still classic 2K, which means it wants your time and your money whenever it can get them. And by now, I think nobody is really surprised about that. So, let’s dig deeper and check out what’s new and what I think about it.

The basketball

The big change this year is defense, and it’s the one 2K fans (including me) have been begging for. For years, playing defense outside the paint felt almost pointless. You could wave your hand in a shooter’s face and watch him drain a fade three anyway. Finally, that’s not the case anymore.

Holding the right stick down puts your defender in a solid, set stance. Holding it up makes him jump to contest the shot, which blocks more but fouls more too. Good defense is now a real skill with real tradeoffs, not just a coin flip for a good animation.

Defense feedback got fixed too. Instead of a percentage number, you now get a color indicator under the shooter showing exactly how well you’re covering him. Steals on drives are judged by both players’ size and strength, so bodies matter, and this will make build more varied instead of all of them being skinny. After several years, bigs can actually be bigs again.

Contest a shot, fight through a screen with intent, jump a passing lane, and the game rewards you for it. Turnovers aren’t free and contests aren’t fake anymore. Five-on-five has real competitive tension (especially online), the kind this series hasn’t had much in years.

On the other hand, offense got a smaller but also meaningful upgrade. Over 7,000 new motion-capture animations from real NBA games make everything feel more physical, bumping in the post, footfights on the wing, drives where balance matters. Stars move more like themselves now, not like the same generic athlete in different jerseys. 2K26 had great animations too, but this year 2K added even more.

In terms of scoring under the basket, there are also some changes. The Dynamic Layup Engine changes a player’s arms and body mid-air depending on who’s defending, so no two layups look the same. And every dunk now requires manual timing on a meter that accounts for where the defenders are. Time it perfectly and you can still get stuffed if a seven-footer is standing in the right spot. Watching your Giannis dunk attempt get eaten by Wembanyama because you got greedy hurts the way it should. Scoring at the rim is a bit of a chess match now, not just purely based on luck.

Rhythm Shooting is back in NBA 2K27 and it’s the strictest it’s ever been. You have to hit the green window on every shot, free throws included. If you have ten years of muscle memory with the old timing, you’re going to struggle for a while. I stuck with button shooting in 2K25 and only occasionally moved to stick shooting in 2K26, so it’s a massive change for someone like me.

Shot timing is also tied to each player’s own motion and ratings, so a quality shooter pulls up on a moving three far more reliably than a power forward attempting the exact same move. Dribble moves come unbundled now, 29 separate slots, so you can build a ball-handler out of pieces you pick yourself, like pairing Curry’s behind-the-back escape with Trae Young’s crossover escape.

Takeover, the “super saiyan” mechanic, no longer runs on one global meter. It keeps five separate category meters, shooting through rebounding, each climbing tiers on its own timer, so a shooter, a passer, and a rim protector each have their own path to becoming unstoppable. String two of them together and the developers’ own word for it, aptly, is “uber demigod.”

If you mostly play actual NBA games, this is the best 2K has ever looked. It’s by no means a generational jump compared to 2K26, but its refinements are very much appreciated.

MyCAREER

The NBA2K27 MyCAREER story, “Fire & Concrete,” is eleven chapters and twice as long as last year’s. You play a high school star whose career is wrecked by a car accident, then fight back through Rucker Park streetball and the G League to the NBA. It’s more grounded than the usual 2K soap opera.

The problem is your character is a blank slate, and the script gives all the good lines to everyone around him. His cousin Cam, played by rapper Vince Staples, is the best thing in the whole story. Cade Cunningham has more personality than the main character in a two-scene cameo. One supposedly huge plot moment is thrown away in a cheap animated sketch instead of a real cutscene. The trailer for this story was better than the actual story. Anyway, it’s much better than last year’s, though that bar is extremely low to begin with. How I wish 2K starts taking the story part of the game more seriously.

The best new idea is Co-Op MyCAREER: a friend can join your save as a permanent partner character named Trace Miller, with his own upgrades, badges, and rewards. Playing through the career at the same time, sharing cutscenes, getting drafted the same night. It’s exactly what the mode needed. The server problems at launch made it flaky, but the idea is great.

But there’s a minor catch: Trace never leaves. He’s on the floor with you for your entire career, even after the story ends, and there’s no way to remove him. If you play solo and don’t care about co-op, you’re stuck with an imaginary roommate for 100 hours.

Overhauling badges is a great improvement for the progression system. The roster grows from 40 badges to 53, and the new token system makes your height and position change what each badge costs, so every build has to give something up.

The “meta” where everyone plays the same build is finally going away (or at the very least lessened). One big caveat: you can’t refund a build to get your spent points back, so experimenting with a new build could cost real money. Or you can pay with your time by grinding it out. Classic 2K.

Eras mode lets you play through five historical NBA windows: Magic vs. Bird in ’84, Jordan in ’91, Kobe in ’03, LeBron in ’10, Curry in ’16. Period rosters, rules, uniforms, broadcast graphics. Stepping into a throwback arena is an immediate hook. The problem: each era requires a brand-new character starting around 60 overall, and the fastest way up every ladder is Virtual Currency (VC). It’s a great idea with a paywall stapled to each copy of it. So in case you want to try it out, make sure to think carefully on which era you want to play on.

MyNBA, The W, MyTEAM

MyNBA remains the best franchise mode in any sports game, full stop. The community asked for changes this year, and 2K delivered more than 20 of them: four-team deals capped at nine assets, the Buyout Market, the new CBA’s apron rules, contract money graded by how likely it is to actually pay out, and GM Trust, a feature that penalizes backing out of arrangements you made with free agents. Offseason negotiations finally have stakes. The new Legacy mode, where you guide one player’s career across a 100-year universe, is the feature fans wanted most, and it ships half-finished. No historical players, missing quality-of-life options.

The W, the WNBA career mode, is the quiet overachiever. It’s leaner than the NBA career, and the systems are smarter: reallocation of attribute points, team badges that swing games, and a playbook that opens up as your teammates trust you. MyWNBA finally mirrors MyNBA’s front-office tools. The City, the online hub, is now fully co-ed, with female players competing at full strength and no hidden stat penalties.

MyTEAM, the card-collection mode, adds Player XP: cards level up through play, and that progress is tied to your account, so it survives trades and auctions. The auction house finally went cross-platform. The Exchange is less stingy with packs. These are real improvements. It’s still MyTEAM, though. By February, centers guard point, everyone shoots threes, and the whole game bends toward whoever spent the most VC. Great ideas, same slot machine under the basketball.

The other stuff

Face Scan moved to the NBA 2K HQ companion mobile app and produces much better likenesses than hand-built faces, as long as your lighting is good. The app itself launched shakier than it should have. General visual quality has plateaued (at least on the consoles), arenas look great, but Legends likenesses are hit-or-miss at times.

NBA-2K27-Review-NoypiGeeks-19

But 2K and NVIDIA has a trick up their sleeve to improve graphics further. NBA 2K27 launched with DLSS 5, a feature that uses AI to make games (and characters) more lifelike. This has been quite controversial as many gamers didn’t like the idea, but it’s been well received by the public once it’s out. In fact, many comments I saw on social media actually praised how similar the players look to the real ones. But this is probably one of the cases where the use case fits, as the players themselves are not fictional characters.

Verdict

There’s no content shortage here. Play Now, franchise modes, career modes, co-op career, Eras, The new City, Pro-Am, streetball, MyTEAM, and even a WNBA mode. And like I said earlier, the basketball mechanics underneath is undeniably the best the series has ever produced.

NBA-2K27-Review-NoypiGeeks-18

Should you buy it if you have older 2K games? Well, if you want the latest and greatest and you mostly play online basketball, NBA 2K27 is obviously the best one out there. And if you’re going to run it on PC with an RTX 50 Series GPU, you can even try it with DLSS 5 to get improved graphics, blurring the line between the game and real life.

There are also the defense refinements, the rim battles, MyNBA’s offseason, the new City and MyCareer Co-op. And if you care about finishing Eras, chasing MyTEAM cards, or freely rebuilding your player, you’ll pay for it, either in patience and time, or in VC.

For those who are on consoles, take note that you have to pay for a monthly subscription fee (like PS Plus) to access online features on top of the NBA 2K27 game itself. PC gamers, on the other hand, get online access for free.
