Solos is taking Meta to court, as reported by Bloomberg. The smart glasses maker alleges that Meta’s popular Ray-Ban smart glasses violate its patented technology.
The lawsuit, filed in a San Francisco federal court, seeks enormous financial penalties. Solos is asking for damages totaling “multiple billions of dollars.” It also requests an injunction that could halt sales of the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
Solos claims Meta’s first-generation Wayfarer model infringes on several of its patents. These patents are described as fundamental to smart eyewear functionality. Though smaller than Meta, Solos has its own line of advanced glasses with comparable features.
For example, Solos sells glasses named AirGo A5. These wearables offer music control and instant speech translation. They also incorporate AI for answering questions, similar to capabilities found in Meta’s product.
The complaint suggests Meta had improper access to Solos’ innovations. It states that Oakley, part of Meta’s partner EssilorLuxottica, learned about Solos’ technology years ago. Oakley employees reportedly tested Solos glasses as far back as 2019.
Additionally, Solos points to a former researcher who studied its products. That individual later joined Meta as a product manager. The lawsuit implies this insider knowledge helped Meta develop its competing glasses.
