Xiaomi is blending past and present with a unique new accessory for its latest smartphones. The company has unveiled a special case that aims to give its new flagship devices the look and feel of a vintage portable game console.
The product, named the Retro Handheld Console Case, is an official accessory for the recently announced Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. These phones feature an unusual design element: a small screen on the back that wraps around the camera system. This secondary display is typically used for previewing selfies or showing notifications, but Xiaomi has found a playful new use for it.
The case, which costs 299 yuan (~Php2,500), adds physical gaming controls to the phone. It includes a circular directional pad and four action buttons. A tiny 200mAh battery built into the case powers the controls. According to Xiaomi, this battery could last for up to 40 days if you play for about three hours daily. To get users started, the package includes a download for the game Angry Birds 2.

However, this novel gaming concept has some clear downsides. The most obvious issue is that the phone’s camera lenses sit directly in the middle of the screen used for gaming. This creates a large obstruction that would likely make the gameplay visual experience awkward and cramped.
There is also a practical trade-off. With the case attached, the phone cannot be charged wirelessly. This could be a significant drawback for users who prefer the convenience of wireless charging pads, especially for a device in the premium price category.
For now, both the Xiaomi 17 Pro series and the retro handheld console case are only available in China. Xiaomi has not announced any plans for an international release.
