Nothing has announced the next major update for its smartphone software, Nothing OS 4.0. The new version is now entering an Open Beta phase, inviting users to test new features ahead of its full public release.
The company describes its software philosophy as building a mobile experience that is intuitive and human-centered. The goal is to create a seamless partnership between the phone’s hardware and software, resulting in a clean and functional design that simplifies life rather than complicating it.
Nothing OS 4.0 builds directly on the previous version with a focus on refinement and visual consistency. The update introduces a sharper look across the entire system. This includes redesigned elements like the lock screen clock and the Quick Settings panel, all aimed at creating a more fluid and uncluttered user experience.

Several key new features are highlighted in the update. An “Extra Dark Mode” offers a deeper, richer dark theme intended to ease eye strain and conserve battery power. For multitaskers, a “Pop-up View” allows for two floating app icons, making it faster to switch between applications without leaving the current screen.
Performance is also a focus, with app optimizations designed to increase the speed and responsiveness of the phone. The camera and gallery applications have been upgraded with new controls and presets, promising a smoother process for both taking and viewing photos.
Addressing the growing role of artificial intelligence, Nothing OS 4.0 introduces new user controls. The company states that these features are designed to give users full transparency and command over AI functions, including a dashboard to monitor usage.
General improvements include a more responsive lock screen, clearer brightness controls, and stronger connections for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The company has also polished smaller details, like faster access to disable Bluetooth call recording.
For users eager to try these features early, Nothing has launched an Open Beta program. Participants will get the first look at Nothing OS 4.0 and will also get an exclusive preview of the upcoming Android 16 operating system. It’s currently available for Nothing Phone 3, Nothing Phone 2, and Nothing Phone 2a series.
