GPD has introduced what they call the fastest gaming handheld in the world, the GPD Win 5.
We’re not questioning their claim as the GPD Win 5 is the first handheld to be powered by the AMD Strix Halo APU series — more powerful than the Ryzen HX 370 or Ryzen Z2 Extreme.
That APU consists of an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor based on the 16-core ZEN 5 architecture. It also has an XDNA 2 AI acceleration that offers 126 TOPS of AI power.
We also have an AMD Radeon 8060S GPU with 40 CU at 2.9GHz. It supports AMD FreeSync Premium and FSR 3.1 for the 7-inch FHD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 6ms response time.
It does have one controversial feature: the 80Wh external removable battery, which kind of beats the portability appeal of handheld consoles. On the upside, it does let users quickly swap batteries when they run out, but that means you need to spend extra for another battery. The battery mounts on the back of the console.
You can also plug it into the wall using a 180W power supply. You might be tied to the wall, but at least it’s lighter. Oh, and the lack of a physical keyboard is curious, too.
For controls, the WIN 5 has “esports grade” capacitive joysticks, Hall Effect triggers with 0.1ms accuracy, and more.
It is also the first handheld to support Mini SSD cards with speeds of up to 1600Mbps. That’s on top of the primary PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVME SSD slot that supports up to 4TB capacities and a UHS-I microSD card slot at 160Mbps speeds.
Pricing and availability for the GPD WIN 5 are yet to be announced.
