Netflix is developing a live-action television series based on Ubisoft’s blockbuster video game franchise Assassin’s Creed, the streaming platform confirmed this week. This is the first time the popular game will be adapted into a TV show, following a 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender that saw moderate success.
The project has been in the works for years, with Netflix initially planning production in 2020. After multiple creative changes, Robert Patino and David Wiener were picked to be in charge of the new show.
While casting and plot specifics remain under wraps, the Assassin’s Creed live-action show will focus on the centuries-long conflict between the Templar and Assassin factions. Players of the games will easily recognize the premise: characters relive ancestral memories through genetic technology.

Since its debut in 2007, Assassin’s Creed has grown into one of gaming’s most celebrated franchises, with 14 main titles and numerous spin-offs. The latest entry, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set in feudal Japan, has been well-received. To date, the franchise has sold over 230 million copies.
Netflix has found success adapting games like Castlevania and Arcane, but Assassin’s Creed could be its biggest live-action video game project yet. As of writing, no release date has been announced.
