A reliable leak indicates that Sony is preparing a new PlayStation 5 model that will feature a smaller internal SSD. The move is reportedly a strategy to combat rising production costs and avoid another price hike, meaning consumers will get less storage for the same amount of money.

The news comes from the website dealabs, which has a strong reputation for accurate PlayStation-related leaks. The report states that this revised PS5 model, identified as CFI-2100, will become available in Europe starting September 13, 2025.

The key change is a reduction in internal storage capacity. The new model will be equipped with an 825GB SSD, a decrease from the 1TB drive that has been standard in all PS5 Slim consoles since their launch in 2023.

Documents filed in Japan as early as June 2024 confirmed these plans, citing efforts to tackle increasing manufacturing costs. This cost-cutting measure means the console’s price will not be lowered to match the reduced storage capacity.

This decision impacts value for consumers. In Europe, the PS5 has already seen two price increases. The first hike raised the price from €399 (~Php24,000) to €449 (~Php27,000). The second increase brought it to its current price of €499 (Php29,900) for the disc version.

The new 825GB model will reportedly maintain this current price of €499, offering less storage than the previous model at the same cost.

While the report specifically mentions Europe, the initial documentation from Japan suggests this storage reduction will likely be implemented in new PS5 models across global markets.
