Sony has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Tencent, accusing the Chinese tech giant of copying its Horizon video game series in an upcoming title called Light of Motiram.
According to legal documents revealed by a report from Reuters, Sony claims Tencent’s game replicates key elements of Horizon Zero Dawn, Lego Horizon Adventures, and Horizon Forbidden West.
The lawsuit, filed in a U.S. court, argues that Light of Motiram mirrors Sony’s franchise in multiple ways, including its post-apocalyptic setting where humans live alongside machines and character designs. Even when Tencent first announced the project back in November 2024, many gaming sites already noted the similarities to Sony’s game.
A particularly striking claim in the lawsuit is that Tencent had previously approached Sony about licensing the Horizon intellectual property. According to Sony, Tencent proposed collaborating on a mobile Horizon game featuring Eastern aesthetics, pet taming, crafting, survival mechanics, and multiplayer modes. After Sony rejected the offer, Tencent still moved forward with Light of Motiram, incorporating many of the same ideas and visual elements.
Sony wants a court order to block the game’s release, along with financial damages and the destruction of all related materials. Tencent has yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit, but company may face an uphill battle defending the similarities.
