OpenAI announced that it’s releasing its own web browser, named ChatGPT Atlas. This strategic move places the company in direct competition with Google, aiming to change how people find information online.
The new ChatGPT Atlas browser will be available first for macOS users. Support for Windows, iOS, and Android operating systems will be added in the future. OpenAI confirmed that at its launch, the product will be offered to all users, including those on the free tier of ChatGPT.
The launch signals that the web browser has become the newest battleground in the AI industry. While Google Chrome is the current market leader, the rise of smart chatbots is creating new ways for users to work on the internet. Other AI startups like Perplexity and The Browser Company also have their own AI-centric browsers.
A key feature of these new AI browsers is a built-in chatbot that sits in a sidebar, automatically understanding the content on your screen. This eliminates the need for users to manually copy and paste text into a separate chat window. OpenAI’s product lead, Adam Fry, stated that ChatGPT Atlas will include this convenient side panel.

The OpenAI Atlas browser will also introduce a “browser history” feature. This allows ChatGPT to learn from the websites you visit and your actions on them. The goal is to use this data to provide more personalized and relevant answers to your questions over time.
Furthermore, ChatGPT Atlas will include an “agent mode” that can perform small web-based tasks automatically. However, this automated assistant will only be available to paying subscribers of ChatGPT’s Plus, Pro, and Business plans at launch.
