ChatGPT is rolling out a new “study mode” feature aimed at encouraging students to use the AI chatbot responsibly for learning, rather than as a shortcut for assignments or exams.

The feature, available through the chatbot’s tools button, guides users through complex topics step by step, similar to a structured lesson. It can also interact with images, allowing students to upload past exam papers for assistance.

OpenAI, ChatGPT’s developer, demonstrated the tool by showing how it helps users understand mathematical concept Bayes’ theorem by first asking about their math proficiency and learning goals.

The launch follows growing concerns over AI misuse in education. OpenAI says more than a third of U.S. college-age adults use ChatGPT, with around a quarter of their messages related to learning or schoolwork.

ChatGPT’s study mode is designed to promote understanding and learning rather than simply providing answers. Unfortunately, students can still bypass it and use ChatGPT for quick solutions if they choose to.
