Incoming House lawmakers for the 20th Congress are already drafting a bill to set a limit for how e-wallets are used for online gambling sites and apps.
Bukidnon 2nd District Rep. Jonathan Keith Flores addressed the ongoing issue of the proliferation of online gambling apps, particularly the accessibility of e-wallets for seamless transactions when topping up their accounts to bet more.
In an interview on DZMM Teleradyo, Cong. Flores criticized the accessibility and convenience of online gambling within the e-wallet itself. He noted that there’s even a list of the games you could load or top up.
- Pinoys now prefer using e-wallets over cash, cards — Visa
- Despite security concerns, Filipinos still trust e-wallets
DZMM host Doris Bigornia also mentioned that online gambling is a ‘silent epidemic,’ which Flores agreed with.
Flores reiterated that the issue is not against e-wallet apps, as he recognized their importance for Filipinos, but focused on e-wallets’ involvement with gambling apps and sites.
He added that the proposed bill’s goal is not to ban online gambling apps entirely on e-wallet apps but to impose stricter regulations and safeguards.
Aside from limiting e-wallets’ accessibility to gambling apps, Flores also wants to restrict advertising of gambling, as it entices everyone to join and participate in online gambling. Notice how some popular celebrities and shows are promoting various online gaming brands.
