Discord has announced drastic age verification updates that will regulate the use for teens.
Starting March 2026, all Discord users are required to do a face scan or submit an ID to verify their age. Failure to do so will limit them to teen-level access restrictions.
Age verification across different apps has been a hot topic and focus of governments in different markets in the last few years.
Hence, Discord has come up with this initiative that ensures adult-designated content is only accessible by adults, while teens will only access age-appropriate content.
Once implemented, all user accounts will be updated to a teen designation by default until they complete the age verification process.
Switching to a teen designation means “updated communication settings, restricted access to age-gated spaces, and content filtering.”
To address possible privacy concerns, Discord says that it will implement these measures:
- On-device processing: Video selfies for facial age estimation never leave a user’s device.
- Quick deletion: Identity documents submitted to our vendor partners are deleted quickly— in most cases, immediately after age confirmation.
- Straightforward verification: In most cases, users complete the process once and their Discord experience adapts to their verified age group. Users may be asked to use multiple methods only when more information is needed to assign an age group.
- Private status: A user’s age verification status cannot be seen by other users.
