The long wait for a Call of Duty movie is finally coming to fruition. Paramount Pictures announced at CinemaCon that the live-action film based on the bestselling video game franchise will hit theaters on June 30, 2028.
The studio positioned the release right before the July 4th holiday weekend, aiming to capture a massive audience for what promises to be a big-budget military action spectacle. The game series has sold more than 500 million copies and attracted over one billion players since it first launched in 2003. It has also generated around $35 billion in revenue.
Peter Berg will direct the movie. He is known for military and disaster films like Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon. The script is being co-written by Berg and Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the hit TV show Yellowstone and writer of the film Sicario. In a video message played at the convention, Berg said both he and Sheridan have strong ties to the special operations community. He promised the movie would be grounded in realism but would still deliver the explosive action that Call of Duty fans expect.

The project is being developed closely with Activision, which is now owned by Microsoft. Specific details about the plot, characters, and casting are still under wraps. Paramount showed a short sizzle reel at the event that highlighted the franchise’s huge cultural impact, but no story details were revealed.
With experienced action filmmakers on board and the financial backing of both Paramount and Activision, the Call of Duty movie is already being seen as one of the biggest pop culture releases of the decade. Pre-production will ramp up over the next couple of years, and fans can expect plenty of speculation about which era of the game or which iconic characters will make it to the big screen.
