Spotify has signed a partnership with Universal Music Group to allow users to create remixes and cover songs using AI. This added authority will come with a price, of course.

Users will only be able to create AI-powered remixes and AI covers of artists who have consented. Also, Spotify will charge an extra fee on top of the standard subscription, as both the original performer and composer will receive a share of any generated revenue.

“For the first time, fans will be able to legally create covers and remixes from participating artists and songwriters’ catalogs, with both the original artist and the songwriter sharing in the value created,” said Spotify head of music Charlie Hellman.

While Spotify has broadly allowed AI music on their platform, but only now do they allow AI-generated music based on an artist’s work.

The move will make Spotify competitive with Suno and Udio, which are two of the most prominent names in the AI music market.

Spotify said this new move will give artists and songwriters a new source of income.

Universal Music Group said that this move is “firmly artist-centric, rooted in responsible AI” and would “drive growth for the entire ecosystem.”
