The gaming community has been buzzing with excitement following the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 last week. The latest installment in the Black Ops series has quickly captured the attention of players, surpassing recent entries in the Modern Warfare series in terms of player numbers on Steam.
Prior to its release, Black Ops 6 was already generating considerable anticipation, but its performance even exceeded expectations. It has outperformed the latest Modern Warfare titles, which had initially revitalized interest in the franchise with their rebooted narratives featuring Captain Price and Bravo Team. The previous Modern Warfare games recorded impressive peak player counts on Steam, with 263,174 for the first installment and 190,707 for its sequel.

However, the reception of Modern Warfare 3 was less favorable, contributing to a decline in player engagement. In contrast, Black Ops 6 has surged ahead, reaching a peak concurrent player count of 306,460 for its opening weekend, according to SteamDB.
Despite these impressive numbers, Black Ops 6’s player count still falls short of Call of Duty: Warzone’s 2.0 peak of 491,670 players. Warzone continues to dominate the multiplayer scene within the franchise, maintaining its position as a standout title.
Players of Black Ops 6 are reportedly engaging with both the campaign and matchmaking modes, which shows the game’s well-rounded appeal. For fans advocating for quality over quantity, Black Ops 6’s success is a promising sign. Unlike the series’ usual rapid release schedule, developers Raven Software and Treyarch took four years to develop Black Ops 6, marking the longest development period in the franchise’s history.
