Sony closed out its latest State of Play presentation with a major surprise: the official reveal of God of War: Laufey, the next entry in the hit series from Sony Santa Monica.

As expected, the game is set to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Sony did not give a release window, so fans do not yet know when they can expect to play it.

The reveal came with an extensive God of War: Laufey gameplay showcase. It confirmed that Faye, the wife of Kratos who was believed to be dead, is the main character this time around. In the previous games, Faye was already deceased before the story began. Her past and her role as a warrior were often talked about, but she was never seen in action until now.

According to Sony, the story picks up after Faye’s death. She wakes up unexpectedly in a strange land. She discovers that the plans she left behind to protect Kratos and their son, Atreus, are now in danger.

To save her family, she must fight through a place called the Everywhen, which is described as the afterlife of the gods. In this realm, ruthless gods from different mythologies are all competing for power in a land full of dangerous magic.

Players will control Faye and use her speed, control, and relentless fighting style to take down enemies with deadly precision. The game is being designed for both new players and longtime fans of the God of War franchise.
