Though the next iteration of the Switch gaming console is yet to be officially unannounced, Nintendo answered a crucial question on every user’s mind.

Can you still play the games from your current Switch in the next-gen Switch? While they remain secretive about the upcoming “Switch 2,” they ensured, through the midyear policy briefing, that the “Nintendo Switch Online Software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch.”

Company President Shintaro Furukuwa also announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Nintendo Switch software and Nintendo Switch Online would be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch.

The additional information only makes it more exciting as they set to announce further details on the successor to Nintendo Switch and its compatibility at a later date.

This update regarding the Nintendo Switch 2’s backward compatibility has been hinted at and rumored in previous announcements, but it hit differently when it became official.

The upgrade to a newer console is a strategy Nintendo is looking at as the sales of the Nintendo Switch hardware (4.72 million units) and software (70.28 million units) both declined year-over-year (YoY) but are still better compared to previous Nintendo platforms on their eighth year.

Nintendo Switch remains a beloved gaming console for all ages, from children to seniors, as the Switch’s annual number of playing users worldwide (those who played at least once) exceeds 100 million.

New titles are also dropping this holiday season, including The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and Mario & Luigi: Brothership.
