A big change is coming to the console gaming world after Sony’s latest announcement.
Rockstar has started pre-orders for the much-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6 on June 25. But it didn’t happen without controversy. Pre-order units will be fully digital and will not come with a physical disc, rising problems for buyers who plan to resell the game after finishing the game.
Now, Sony has made an announcement that backs up Rockstar Games’ move. In a press release, Sony said that physical game discs for PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.
Sony said that it won’t impact games that are already released or will be released prior to January 2028 in disc format.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” Sony said.
After the date, games will only be available on the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.
