A new video game is in development that will transport players to 11th century Southern India. The game is called “Son of Thanjai,” and it focuses on the story of King Rajendra Chola, one of India’s greatest emperors.
The story is set in the city of Thanjavur during the golden age of the Chola dynasty. Players will step into the role of a young Rajendra Chola, who is struggling to live up to the legacy of his powerful father. The game’s narrative will explore themes of duty, destiny, and loyalty in a world where the player’s power is constantly under threat.
A key feature of “Son of Thanjai” is its combat system, which is built around a unique historic weapon: the Surulvaal. This is a flexible, whip-like sword rooted in Kalarippayattu, an ancient South Indian martial art. The developers are using fluid animation and full-performance motion capture to create what they promise will be brutal and realistic melee combat. Players can choose to engage enemies directly or use the Surulvaal for stealth takedowns to sneak through enemy camps.

Beyond combat, the game aims to offer a rich cultural experience. Players will encounter authentic depictions of temple celebrations, festivals, food, street performers, songs, and traditional sports from the era. The developers state that these elements will help connect players to the world and its people as they explore the history of the Chola dynasty.
Son of Thanjai is currently available to wish list on Steam. Set for release in late 2026, the game will be available on Xbox Series X, PC, and PlayStation 5.
