Thinking of leaving Facebook? You might want to back up all your data, especially your photos and videos. Here’s how.
We won’t be surprised if you decide to leave Facebook considering how toxic and problematic the platform has been in the last couple of years.
But don’t just delete your account without a plan. In years to come, you might want to look back on old memories through photos or videos and realize your only copy was gone forever with your Facebook account.
Don’t worry, backing up all your photos and videos on Facebook is really easy. It can be done in under 5 minutes — no need to manually download files one by one. Here’s how.
What do I need to backup photos and videos from Facebook?
The back-up method we’ll show you requires that you have a Dropbox account. All the files will be transferred there, so make sure you already have an account.
In case you don’t have one, here’s another method using Google Photos.
How to backup Facebook photos and videos easily
Step 1: Log in to your Facebook account. For mobile, tap the Menu icon on the bottom right. For desktop, it’s the button next to the Notifications icon at the top right. This whole process works for both the mobile app and desktop site of Facebook.
Step 2: Click “Settings & Privacy”. Then, click “Settings”.
Step 3: Scroll down and look for the Your Information section. Then, click “Transfer a Copy of Your Information”.
Step 4: Click “Next” then choose Dropbox.
Step 5: Choose what photos or videos you want to download. If you don’t want to download all files, you can choose the date range or specific album for photos or specific videos. You can also opt to just download photos or just videos.
Step 6: Click “Connect”. It will open Dropbox’s website for you to sign in to your account. Once clear, click “Allow”.
Step 7: Click “Confirm Transfer”. It will then ask for your password for confirmation. After you hit continue, the process will start. You will receive a notification from Facebook that the transfer is complete once it’s done.

How to check the status of the transfer?
Login to Facebook and go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Your Information > Transfer a Copy of Your Information. Once there, you should see the status of the photo and video transfer. You can also stop the process from here if you want to.
How to see the transferred files?
Step 1: Login to your Dropbox account via the mobile app or desktop site. Then, click “Files” at the bottom for mobile, or “All Files” on the left side for the desktop website.
Step 2: Look for the folder named “Apps”.
Step 3: Tap the folder named “Facebook Data Transfer”.
Step 4: Now you can see the transferred photos and videos neatly organized into folders. Inside the Photo Transfer folders, you’d see all your photo albums are also grouped into folders.
How long does the transfer take?
That depends on how many photos and videos you have in your account. The process could take a couple of minutes to several hours. If you have plenty of media uploaded on Facebook, expect to wait a little longer.
That’s it. Let us know in the comment section below if you have further questions.
