AMOLED technology is on the verge of overtaking TFT LCD shipments by 2024, according to a new report by Omdia.
The smartphone display market has finally entered recovery mode following the complete lifting of COVID-19 restrictions back in Q2 2023. Annual smartphone display shipments reached 1.45 billion units in 2023, reflecting a 5% increase compared to 2022. This upward trend is expected to keep going, with projections indicating that shipments in the H1 2024 will reach 715 million units—a 9% rise compared to the 657 million units shipped back in H1 2023.
Omdia’s data for the first quarter of 2024 revealed that AMOLED shipments surged to 182 million units, representing a substantial 39% year-on-year increase. In contrast, TFT LCD shipments fell to 172 million units, marking a 10% year-on-year decline. This quarter marks the first time ever that AMOLED shipments have surpassed those of TFT LCD in one quarter.

According to Omdia’s forecast, AMOLED is expected to account for 53% of smartphone screen shipments in H2 2024. This share is anticipated to grow to 56% by the Q3 2024, solidifying AMOLED’s dominance with over 50% market share.
The release of the iPhone 16 in Q4 2024 is expected to boost AMOLED shipments even further, solidifying its leading position throughout the year. From 2024 onwards, AMOLED technology is projected to lead the market over LCD.
