For the first time ever, Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi is now the second-largest smartphone vendor in the world in terms of shipment.
Per market analyst firm Canalys, Xiaomi reached the milestone in Q2 2021 based on preliminary estimates, which shows the company has secured 17 percent of market share, an 83-percent year-on-year growth.
In comparison, Samsung is the number one vendor with 19 percent market share (+15% YoY growth). Apple has been displaced to third place with 14 percent share (+1% YoY growth). OPPO and Vivo rank fourth and fifth, respectively.
As to how Xiaomi managed to achieve second place, Canalys cites Xiaomi’s aggressive, mass-market product pricing along with “channel partner consolidation and more careful management of older stock in the open market.”
All vendors in the top 5 have experienced an increase in shipments. Canalys attributes the economic recovery and vaccine rollout as factors leading to a strong growth momentum for global smartphone shipments.
