Apple has emerged as the world’s leading smartphone seller, dethroning Samsung after a dominant 12-year run. The International Data Corporation (IDC) reported that in 2023, Apple sold 234.6 million units, surpassing Samsung’s 226.6 million units.

The fragmented Android market and the rise of low-end competitors like Transsion, Xiaomi, OPPO, HONOR, vivo, and Google, along with Huawei’s strong performance in China, have impacted Samsung’s sales.

With a market share of 20.1 percent, Apple outperformed Samsung’s 19.4 percent, solidifying its position as the industry leader.

Although 2023 ended with a 3.2 percent decline in global smartphone shipments, the IDC anticipates a recovery in the industry for 2024. The second half of the year saw growth, bolstering expectations for 2024. This positive outlook is encouraging for smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, as they strive to regain lost ground.

The sales figures were released just ahead of Samsung’s product launch event in California, where the company will showcase its latest flagship smartphones. Samsung is undoubtedly working to reclaim its status as the world’s leading smartphone seller through innovative and competitive offerings.
