Tiny round batteries are easy for young kids to mistake for candy. But if a child swallows one, it can burn their throat in less than 15 minutes. Every year, American hospitals report more than 3,500 cases of kids swallowing these small power cells.
Energizer has finally come up with a smarter way to handle this problem. The company just launched a new line of batteries called Ultimate Child Shield. These are 20mm lithium coin batteries, the same size used in many small electronics. But they work very differently from regular ones.
First, these batteries do not cause burning in the esophagus if a child swallows them. That alone is a big deal. Second, the batteries have a special blue dye inside. When the battery touches saliva, the dye turns the child’s mouth blue. That gives parents a clear sign that something has happened. They can then rush the child to a doctor.

The new batteries come in three sizes: 2032, 2025, and 2016. You will find these sizes in things like wrist watches, digital thermometers, kitchen scales, and Apple AirTags.
Energizer says the goal is to give families extra protection. The blue color acts like an alarm. The no burn feature buys critical time. Together, they could make a scary accident much less dangerous.
