Research firm IDC just released its Philippine Smartphone Market report for 2021.

As per IDC, the local smartphone market declined by 5.6% year-on-year by only shipping 17.8 million units in 2021, versus 2020’s 18.9 million. IDC accuses the recurring lockdowns and global supply issues during the second half of the year, which resulted in the failure to meet the demand during the holiday season, hence a decline in Q4 of 2021.

Realme Philippines still made the most shipment in Q4 2021 with a total of around 1,030,000 million units. That’s 20.6% of the pie. Coming in on distant second is Vivo with 798,000 million units shipped.

Taking the third spot is Transsion (TECNO, Infinix), which only sold 725,000 units, versus the 977,000 the year before. But possibly the most disappointing loser is OPPO, which only sold 699,000 units in Q4 2021 versus the 1,168,000 units during the same quarter in 2020. That’s a whopping -40.2% growth.

While it had a disappointing last quarter, OPPO had a decent year after all. For the entire 2021, the company sold 2.62 million units, which accounts for a small but at least not negative 0.3% growth.

Realme is still on the lead, by a lot. It shipped 3.96 million units in 2021, which is about a quarter of the entire market. It’s followed by Transsion and Samsung, which posted a YoY growth of a whopping 45.1% and 27.3%, respectively. Sadly, while Vivo managed to be on the top 5 list, it had a disappointing -28.8% growth.

While the entire market had a pretty disappointing year in 2021, IDC is optimistic that the market will bounce back this year as the world slowly opens.
