Development has begun for the next version of the USB standard. So called the USB Type-C connector, it’s a major overhaul that will be smaller and can accept plugs in any orientation.

Once it arrives, users will no longer have to fiddle with their thumbdrive and other peripherals when plugging into a USB slot. Minding universal compatibility across all devices, the USB Type-C connector will be designed to consider size and usability. Hopefully, this will pave the way for thinner mobile devices.

Like Apple’s Lightning connector that was first introduced in the iPhone 5, the USB Type-C connector will make existing USB devices obsolete. Fortunately, the USB 3.0 Promoter Group will be releasing a specification for cables and adapters so as to accommodate these older devices.
