The gaming industry is experiencing significant growth, and not all players possess the most advanced hardware to enjoy their favorite games. This situation has led to the development of Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) by Nvidia for its RTX 3000 series. In addition, AMD soon introduced a comparable tech called FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR).
Now, Qualcomm is launching its own rendition of the technology for mobile devices, known as Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR), aiming to upscale gaming content and enhance performance.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon GSR has the ability to upscale 1080p gameplay to 4K while minimally affecting latency and battery life. The technology employs a single-pass super-resolution technique that merges edge sharpening and upscaling, resulting in decreased latency and power consumption, which can boost overall gaming performance. Do take note that these performance and improvement claims have not been verified, as the technology is yet to be released to the general public.
According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon GSR offers the following benefits for both mobile games and XR devices:
- Increased resolution while maintaining graphic fidelity
- Higher frame-rates
- Extended battery life due to lower power consumption
- Enhanced visual fidelity while maintaining frame-rate
Snapdragon GSR is made and optimized for Adreno GPUs, and Qualcomm has provided examples of its functionality on the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
While the company has not announced the specific SoCs that will feature this technology, it is highly likely that the aforementioned models will be included. Additionally, as it is a recent chipset in the 7 Gen 1 series, the 7+ Gen 2 is also expected to incorporate it.
