It’s already one thing that our government supplied outdated equipment for its employees, but apparently these books and computers were bought at ludicrously expensive prices.

According to a report by News5, a DepEd supplier charged Php400,000 per computer package, which consists of some educational software, instructional materials, 1-day technical support, accessories, and a desktop unit computer that’s powered by obsolete components—Intel Pentium IV, 128MB RAM, 40GB internal storage, Nvidia GeForce 4 graphics, and Windows 98 SE. Such a package should only cost around Php15,000 today (and I’m even being generous on that estimate). And even when they were bought in the early 2000s, the Php400,000 price per package would still be completely outrageous.

Other suppliers had also billed the government for books at Php200-300 each, when they should only be priced less than Php100 because of their cheap materials. Worse, these suppliers are apparently still in business with the government.

To put everything in one word: corruption. Two DepEd officials (who still remain in office) are allegedly in collaboration with these suppliers. They’re apparently receiving some kickbacks for buying overpriced equipment.

    1. Those computers priced at 400k each are collectors item yong tinatawag na museum pieces. heirloom and antiques are expensive!

  2. 2002 pa ang procurement nito so no need to note that they were buying “obsolete” technology. However P 400,000.00 is indeed too much despite including a 21″ TV, multimedia microphone and amplified speakers.

  3. before you make your judgment with the present administration, let’s double check. it’s clearly mentioned that this happened in 2008-2010, during former President Macapagal-arroyo’s term. Be fair. If otherwise, it will show how little we know on anything.

Dagdagan mo pa iyan ng ipinapatupad na contribution sa classroom o ng PTA at least 100 pesos per pupil/student and you are looking on 20M enrolees sa public schools this year, that is a whooping 2B for classroom repairs and beatification.

    1. Corrupt talaga, bukod sa incompetent ang mga government officials nagpasa nito sa Bids and Awards Committee ng DepEd kung meron man BAC. Pumupwesto sa government office para magnakaw.

      1. Bakit hindi kasuhan yong Dept of Education Secretary during the Gloria Arroyo kleptocracy!

    2. Sorry. But get your facts straight. Br. Luistro wasn’t the DepEd Secretary during GMA’s time.
