Samsung is improving the software support for its smart TVs.

The South Korean tech giant offers one of the longest support for smartphones. Now, they are doing the same with one of its most popular products: smart TVs.

As per the report, Samsung made the announcement in its research lab in South Korea. Samsung said that, starting with the 2023 models, their smart TVs will get 7 years of software updates. Particularly, its Tizen OS-powered TVs — an operating system developed by Samsung.

7 years seems about right as studies suggest that an average TV lasts about that same duration. But before consumers reach 7 years, their TVs have stopped receiving updates for years.

“With the seven-year free upgrade of Tizen applied to AI TVs, we will widen the gap in market share with Chinese companies,” said Samsung Electronics President for Visual Display Business Division Yoon Seok-woo.

Samsung is currently the biggest TV maker in the world, but a lot of competitors from China are inching behind. In fact, competition has become so intense that the South Korean government has apparently urged rivals, Samsung and LG, to work together to stay competitive.

With a company as big as Samsung, we shall see this move have a ripple effect and expect other TV makers to do the same.
