Just hot off the grill! At the IFA Event in Berlin, Sony just announced their new flagship phone, the Xperia Z3, and its little brother, the Xperia Z3 Compact. Both are powerhouses in their own right.
Sony Xperia Z3 Specs
- 5.2″ IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 1080p resolution (1080 x 1920 pixels), ~424 ppi
- Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 Quad-core 2.5 GHz Krait 400 processor with Adreno 330 GPU
- 20.7MP main camera with auto focus and LED flash, 2.2 MP front camera, up to ISO 12,800 sensitivity
- 3GB RAM, 16/32GB internal expandable up to 128GB microSD card
- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS + GLONASS, GSM, HSPA, LTE
- microUSB v2.0
- Android 4.4.4 KitKat
- 3100mAh non-removable battery
Pretty hefty specs, though I wish they used USB3.0 standard. Some might also comment on using “just” a 1080p resolution on a flagship phone, but at that screen, anything higher would just be plain unnecessary IMHO. And, as standard to the Xperia line, it’s dust- and waterproof rated at IP65 and IP68, respectively. If you own a PS4, then you’re in for a treat as you can use the phone as either a DS controller (though I fail to see why you’d want to) or as a remote screen. I’m sure other connectivity features will arise.
But, as good as the flagship phone is, the little brother should get more attention, IMHO. Personally, Sony’s got it right when it comes to creating Mini-me versions of flagship phones. Whereas other manufacturers give us minified versions of flagships in terms of size and specs, Sony would give us smaller but almost-just-as-meaty versions.
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Specs
- 4.6″ IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 720p resolution (720 x 1280 pixels), ~319 ppi
- Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 Quad-core 2.5 GHz Krait 400 processor with Adreno 330 GPU
- 20.7MP main camera with auto focus and LED flash, 2.2 MP front camera, up to ISO 12,800 sensitivity
- 2GB RAM, 16 internal expandable up to 64GB microSD card
- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS + GLONASS, GSM, HSPA, LTE
- microUSB v2.0
- Android 4.4.4 KitKat
- 2600mAh non-removable battery
See? Specs aren’t too far apart, and would definitely go toe-to-toe with most flagship phones! At 4.6″ screen real estate, having a 720p resolution is just right, and you still get the other bells and whistles such as the same dust- and waterproof certifications, and the PS4 features.
No pricing and availability yet in our shores, but it’s set to be released in the US in the coming fall, so we’re guessing it’ll hand here at that time.
