A new initiative from Smart Communications will let its customers exchange text messages in places currently beyond the reach of its cellular networks.
The telecommunications firm has joined forces with Lynk Global, a company that uses satellites to act like orbiting cell towers. This system will communicate straight with regular smartphones without needing any special equipment, a feature known as Direct to Device.
At first, the service will support sending and receiving SMS texts and using messaging applications such as WhatsApp, even without a standard phone signal. Company officials believe this will be a critical tool for people in isolated communities and for maintaining communication during natural disasters.

Smart added that more advanced services, including full voice calls and mobile data, are planned for introduction within the coming few years as the satellite network expands.
Before a full launch, the partners will carry out extensive testing. Radames Zalameda, who leads Smart’s Network Strategy and Transformation Office, said the process includes laboratory checks, establishing roaming links, and real-world trials. These tests will give priority to island villages, mountainous areas, and major shipping lanes.
