A new study shows that most freelance and on-demand workers in the Philippines appreciate the independence their jobs offer, but many feel anxious about their income stability and future financial safety.

The research, carried out by global firm Ipsos, indicates a strong sense of contentment with control over their schedules, yet it also uncovers deep-seated concerns about inconsistent paychecks and a lack of benefits like health insurance or retirement packages.

The report, which offers a detailed snapshot of the independent workforce, gathered responses from 1,500 individuals across Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao. The survey took place from late March to late April of this year.

Findings reveal that the typical gig worker is often young, with those aged 25 to 34 forming the largest group. The type of work also varies by gender. Women are more likely to hold remote roles, such as online freelancing, making up 62% of that sector. Men, on the other hand, represent 76% of those in jobs requiring a physical presence, like delivery services or transportation.

The primary motivation for pursuing this work is the need for additional earnings, with more than half of those surveyed citing it as a key reason. The ability to choose one’s own hours and work from any location were also highly popular aspects.

A notable 6 out of 10 respondents view this line of work as a permanent career choice rather than a temporary fix. Approximately 3 in 10 do not intend to seek other forms of employment.

However, this positive outlook is tempered by practical worries. Issues like unpredictable pay, questions about fair compensation, and missing workplace protections were commonly reported. A large majority, 64%, expressed that having a plan for retirement is a crucial need that is currently unmet.

An expert from Ipsos in the Philippines commented that while online platforms have created new ways to earn a living, significant problems regarding income security and worker benefits have not been solved.
