TECNO Phantom X2, X2 Pro: Dimensity 9000, retractable lens

TECNO Mobile’s premium Phantom series gets a refresh before the year ends with the release of the Phantom X2 and X2 Pro.

Both the TECNO Phantom X2 and X2 Pro are powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 octa-core processor. It may not be the fastest CPU around, but this power-efficient 4nm chip comes with a single Cortex-X2 prime CPU core, three Cortex-A710, and four Cortex-A510. It then has a Mali-G570 MC10 GPU.

For the Pro model, you’re getting 12GB of RAM while the vanilla has 8GB. Both will share the same 256GB of fast UFS 3.1 storage.

TECNO Mobile also improved the displays on these devices. They are enormous at 6.8 inches, has a fast 120Hz refresh rate, an apt FHD+ resolution, a fancy AMOLED panel, and come with flagship-level Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection.

With a similar screen and battery capacity of 5,160mAh, both the X2 and X2 Pro should feel similar in the hands. A 45W fast-charging adapter is also included in the box.

Now let’s talk about their differences, which primarily lie in the camera department. The Pro model boasts a clever retractable lens for the portrait camera. The said lens sits in front of a sharp 50-megapixel ISOCELL JN1 sensor. It has a wide f/1.5 aperture, which allows for better light capture to take full advantage of the large sensor and creates a shallower depth of field for a more natural-looking blurred background.

The said retractable lens has a 65mm equivalent, which essentially makes it a telephoto shooter with 2.5x magnification. Being retractable means that the device stays thin when you’re not using it. A powered mechanism allows the lens to extend or retract when needed.

Joining the retractable lens is a 50-megapixel ISOCELL GNV main camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens that doubles as a macro shooter.

On the other hand, the Phantom X2 uses a standard 64-megapixel camera with OIS. It is joined by a 13-megapixel ultra-wide and a dedicated 2-megapixel depth sensor.

Meanwhile, the duo shares the same 32-megapixel selfie snappers.

The official prices of the Phantom X2 and X2 Pro in the global market, especially in the Philippines, are yet to be announced. But in Saudi Arabia, they retail for SAR2,699 (around Php39,700) and SAR3,499 (around Php51,500), respectively. The Pro model comes with a special Mars Orange color that has a vibrant look and is also said to have been made using recycled plastic.
