Chinese automaker BYD has become the world’s top-selling electric vehicle brand.

BYD sold 641,350 new vehicles in the first half of 2022, a 314.9% increase from the same period last year. Over 50% (323,519) are Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), and the rest are comprised of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).

Under sales regulations in China, battery electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are both considered as new energy vehicles (NEV).

On the other hand, its main competitor Tesla delivered 564,743 vehicles in the first 6 months of 2022, slowing down in the 2nd quarter as the lockdown in China disrupted production.

BYD also overtook South Korea LG as the world’s second-largest high-voltage battery manufacturer. The company’s success came at a time when the Chinese government was encouraging its companies to invest in clean energy.

While the numbers are certainly impressive, it’s important to note that majority of BYD sales right now are from China. However, that could change soon as the automaker is expanding aggressively in other regions.

Here’s the list of BYD electric cars that contributed the most to the achievement.
