Amid declining numbers in 2022, PC distributions worldwide seem to have seen further dips during the first quarter of 2023, according to research firms IDC and Canalys—a drop of somewhere between 29 to 33 percent year-over-year.

In comparison to the nosedive, as seen during the holidays, the drop proved to be steeper still and did not spare even known brands. Apple, which is known for its luxurious products, appears to have suffered the most at a 40 percent decline, while brands like ASUS, Dell, and Lenovo all faced a 30 percent reduction in their respective shipments. Meanwhile, HP encountered a lesser, but still substantial, plummet on the same at 24 percent.

Still coming off from the repercussions of the global health crisis, the reasons behind the falling numbers are somewhat obvious. Chief among them is the tumultuous economy which saw the rising cost of goods in recent years. Another is due to the winding down of the spending on remote work essentials as workers resume work in the office. Either computers have become more expensive for consumers or they simply already have enough to work on.

As for the case of Apple, it is likely its position in the high-end market has put it in a difficult place. But recent reports suggested that the company opting to build its chips in-house may have averted a crisis on itself that is otherwise faced by other companies.

Despite the plunge, analysts were optimistic that this is already the worst that can happen in 2023, suggesting a probable improvement in the digits across this year.
