Apple has released its new M6 and M5 Ultra chips, which will debut on the Mac Mini and Mac Studio, respectively.
The new Apple M6 chip was built on a 2nm process and features 2x super cores, 4x performance cores, and 6x efficiency cores. As per Apple, this CPU has the fastest single-threaded performance in the world.
As per Apple, the M6 is 1.2x faster than the M5 chip in terms of multi-thread performance and is 2.4x faster than the M1. It supports up to 32GB unified memory with speeds of up to 170Gbps.
It also has a 12-core GPU, with all cores boasting a Neural Accelerator, and is said to be 30% faster than the M5 and 8x faster than the M1 in terms of GPU AI tasks. Dynamic Caching and hardware ray tracing are also supported.
Apple also included a dual 16-core neural engine that doubles the peak compute power in on-device AI workflows than the M5.
Next stop, we have the Apple M5 Ultra. Like the previous Ultras, it combines two dual-die M5 Max chips using Apple’s UltraFusion interconnect technology. This means that it is the first M-series chip to have a quad-die architecture, and Apple claims it’s currently their most powerful chip.
You can configure it with up to 36-core CPU with 12x super cores and 24x performance cores. This translates to 1.25x better single-threaded performance and 1.3x better multi-threaded performance than the M3 Ultra.
Meanwhile, the GPU can have 80 cores and up to 32 Neural Engine cores. This translates to 4.3x better peak AI compute than the M3 Ultra, 2x more video encode and decode blocks, allowing it to handle up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 30fps videos at the same time.
You can then configure it to have up to 512GB of unified memory at up to 1.2TB/s speeds.
