ASUS has introduced a follow-up to their first handheld gaming console. Meet the new ASUS ROG Ally X.

The ASUS ROG Ally X is not a proper successor to the first Ally. Instead, this is a slightly refreshed and bumped-up version. Announced at COMPUTEX 2024 in Taiwan, the new model boasts an 80Wh battery, which is twice as big as the 40Wh capacity of the standard version.

ASUS has also improved its storage. It now uses a 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD storage versus the 512GB of its predecessor. Plus, it should now be easier to upgrade as it uses the more standard M.2 2280 size drive versus the 2242 of the past.

Meanwhile, the RAM got a decent improvement. It now uses a 24GB 7500MHz LPDDR5 module, which is bigger and faster than the 16GB 6400Mhz of the standard Ally.

Another key improvement is in the cooling system. The ROG Ally X boasts new, slimmer fans while offering 10% better airflow. The direction of the airflow was also moved towards the display so it stays cool when gaming.

ASUS has also made a few polishing on the design. The curves are now more subtle and less sharp, have deeper handgrips, improved joysticks for longer life and better feedback, a better D-pad that has less stickiness for circular movements, and the fingerprint sensor has been redesigned so it’s easier to find.

The rest are essentially the same. It still uses an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, has a 7-inch 1080p IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync Premium, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, 65W charger, and Windows 11 HOme with an improved ASUS Armoury Crate SE.

What’s missing now is the ROG XG Mobile Interface port. Instead, we now get two USB-C ports that have Thunderbolt 4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2, respectively.
