If you grew up playing Counter-Strike 1.6 in the 2000s, we have good news for you!

In an X post, developers announced the upcoming release of CS: Legacy, a fully standalone remake of the classic Counter-Strike 1.6 built from the ground up using Valve’s official 2013 Source Engine SDK codebase.

To be clear, the game is not an official remake from Valve Corporation, the original developer and publisher of Counter-Strike 1.6. Instead, it was developed by fans, but not just any fans, ex-CSPromod team members, giving new life to a beloved computer game that defined a generation.

“The game features fully custom assets and game code, on top of our own major rewrite to the renderer, shaders and various systems,” said in the tweet.

It’s also free for everyone to play on Steam once it’s released, according to “Red (red6429),” the Project Leader and Lead Developer for CS: Legacy on Discord.

He reiterated to everyone that the game would be free to play and would remain that way. There will be no purchase, key, or donation required to play the game.

The exact date of its release and availability is still unclear, but it’s expected to ship in the latter half of 2025.
