The first Double Dragon, launched in 1987, is one of the first co-op beat-em-up games. Now, it’s getting a new version for modern-era players who want to have that nostalgic side-scrolling gaming experience with the Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons.
Launching in the coming months, the new Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will be available in almost all major gaming platforms: Xbox, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. You can check the new trailer below.
The game will bring back the same beat-en-up formula, and of course, a retro pixelated art style. Games can pick from 13 different characters with two-player local co-op mode so you can play with a friend with no hassle.
But if you’re playing alone, there’s a tag-team ability that lets one player play two characters at once.
Modus Games, the developer of the new installation, is also teasing roguelite elements like dynamic mission selection that offers randomized stage strength, difficulty, and enemy number.
Being a game sold in 2023, players can also expect purchasable upgrades and a few RPG mechanics.
The story revolves around the same protagonists, Jimmy and Billy Lee, having been through a rough couple of years. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic New York City ruined by nuclear war, with radioactive streets full of hooligans.
