A sealed Super Mario Bros. video game breaks record and has become the most-expensive video game sold at an auction.

The unopened 1985 Super Mario Bros. copy, still with its original plastic wrap, was sold to an anonymous bidder for USD114,000 (around Php5.6 million). The winning bid surpassed the previous auction record of USD100,000 for a single video game set forth by another sealed copy of similar game.

Why is this copy of Super Mario Bros. highly desired? Notably, the piece comes with “hangtabs”, a rare variant of the original US retail packaging. Aside from that, it also got a 9.4 out of 10 grade which means it still of superb condition.

The said item was part of a 1980s and 1990s video game selection. The whole selection was sold for almost UDS700,000 (or Php34.6 million). Other titles sold in the auction include “Mike Tyson’s Punch-out”, a video game based on the boxing champion. It sold for USD50,400 (roughly Php2.5 million).
