The Department of Transportation (DOTr) recently announced that commuters can now simply use cashless transactions when riding the MRT-3.
This is a welcome improvement in public transportation, as infrequent MRT riders usually wait in line to purchase single-journey tickets (SJT).
Now, they can tap their credit or debit cards, as well as their e-wallets, GCash Commuter QR Code, and NFC-enabled Android phones in the upgraded turnstiles.
The DOTr stated that the integrated payment setup is the first of its kind in the world, and it doesn’t incur additional costs for passengers or the government.

DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon recognized the massive help from their partners like the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), GCash, VISA, and KentKart.
The upgraded turnstiles are currently only available in MRT-3 stations, but it is promised that the implementation of modern payment systems for LRT-1 and LRT-2 stations will start in the following months, in partnership with RCBC.
