Outgoing Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law the measures that will give a 25-year franchise extension to six (6) telecommunication firms, as well as two broadcasting firms and one state university.

One of those awarded the 25-year extension is Meridian Telekoms, Inc, which is commonly known as Smart Broadband, a wireless subsidiary of industry giant PLDT, Inc. The franchise was awarded under the Republic Act no. 11678.

Also awarded are Mati Telephone Corporation under RA No. 11674, Marbel Telephone System Inc under RA No.11677, Odiongan Telephone Corporation under RA No. 11675, Bicol Telephone and Telegraph Inc under RA No. 11679, and R.C Yulo Telephone System Inc under RA No.11676.

Two broadcasting firms also got a 25-year franchise extension. There’s Sulu-Tawi-Tawi Broadcasting Foundation Inc under RA No. 11673 and Capricom Broadcasting Network under RA No.11681.

Meanwhile, the Southern Luzon State University was also given a 25-year franchise “to operate for educational and other related purposes within its campuses in Quezon Province.”
