The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced its plans to upgrade the capital’s traffic management system by introducing adaptive, AI-driven traffic signal lights. The move aims to reduce violations and accidents caused by traditional countdown timers.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes revealed during a press conference that the agency has already begun removing countdown timers from 521 intersections under its supervision. However, traffic lights managed by local government units (LGUs) still use the old system. Artes said the MMDA will coordinate with LGUs to phase out the timers, though decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
Studies in the Philippines and abroad show that countdown timers encourage risky behavior, such as speeding up to beat red lights, leading to more violations and collisions. Instead of slowing down, drivers rush through intersections, increasing the risk of accidents.
The MMDA’s adaptive system, already used in countries like Singapore, Vietnam, and Cyprus, adjusts signal timing based on real-time traffic flow. Since 2022, the agency has been replacing outdated traffic lights with this technology.
Artes also shared plans to enhance traffic detection by switching from ground loop sensors to AI-powered video detectors using advanced CCTV cameras. The upgrades are part of broader efforts to modernize Metro Manila’s traffic infrastructure and improve road safety.
