The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) reported that sales of SIM cards have significantly decreased following the implementation of mandatory registration.

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy said that this is a result of crime syndicates slowing down on buying SIM cards. In the past, scammers frequently buy new SIMs to use for their fraudulent activities.

Uy also noted that the SIM card sales will continue to go down “because there will be no more demand.”

After the full rollout of SIM registration, the demand will slide even more because only tourists and foreigners are expected to purchase new ones.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) previously warned SIM sellers that they will be liable for any action committed by the pre-registered SIM they sold.
