HUAWEI and its industry partners have unveiled RedCap technology as it prepares to launch it for commercial use globally.
The HUAWEI RedCap is a lightweight technology that’s defined as the 3GPP Release 17. It is said to be 80% cheaper than 5G eMBB (enhanced mobile broadband) modules that are used on mobile devices.
What’s more, it offers “10-fold higher network capacity” than 4G while consuming 20% less power. It also works with major 5G capabilities such as network slicing, URLLC, edge computing, and 5G LAN so it also works with industry applications.
HUAWEI also highlighted how they were able to successfully implement RedCap end-to-end commercial deployment in more than 10 cities in China — which includes Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Jinan — with China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom, in industries like electricity, manufacturing, and more.
Carriers from UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Thailand have also done the RedCap technical verification.
The RedCap was showcased during the Global Mobile Broadband Forum (MBFF) 2023, where they exhibited 10 products that featured RedCap modules, DTUs, and CPEs. They reckon that more than 50 industry devices will be launched by the end of 2023.
HUAWEI aims to work with global carriers, B2B customers, and different vendors to increase the deployment of RedCap technology.
