A modern version of the Game Boy Advance has finally appeared, but Nintendo isn’t the one behind it.
Ayaneo, a company that specializes in retro-style gaming handhelds, just showed off its newest device called the Konkr Pocket Advance. The handheld clearly borrows its look from Nintendo’s classic horizontal system.
The screen measures 3.5 inches and keeps the original’s 3:2 shape. But the resolution jumps up to 960 x 640, which is a big step forward from the old GBA screen.
Konkr Pocket Advance’s button layout has been updated too. You get the standard ABXY buttons, plus some extra ones for menus and more shoulder buttons on top. For connections, there is a USB-C port, a slot for microSD cards, and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in. The company also kept the headphone jack and added a wheel to control volume.
Ayaneo has shown two color options so far. One is a dark blue that looks a lot like the original indigo GBA. The other is an orange shade that reminds people of the spice-colored version from years ago.
The company has not shared any details about pricing or when the device will go on sale. But many buyers are worried about availability. Ayaneo’s last handheld, the Pocket Micro 2, sold out almost instantly because the company only made a very small number of units. Fans are hoping this new device will be easier to get.
