Given the success and popularity of ZenFone series, it’d be expected and a smart move for Asus to create a new series of tablets and slap the “Zen” branding on it. Details obtained from the FCC and a couple of Russian stores do seem to confirm that the Asus ZenPad 7 and ZenPad 8 are in development.
As its namely clearly states, the Asus ZenPad 8 is the larger tablet of the two with its 8-inch display and 2048×1536 (QXGA) resolution. It will have several configurations according to processor (Intel Atom Z3560 or Z3530) and built-in storage (8, 16, 32, or 64GB). All configurations will have 2GB of RAM.
The Asus ZenPad 7 comes equipped with a smaller 7-inch IPS display with 1024×600 (WSVGA) resolution. It will have two variants, one with 3G connectivity (model no. Z170CG) and another with Wi-Fi only (Z170C). There will also be a 2-megapixel rear camera, a 0.3-megapixel (VGA) front camera and 3950mAh battery. Available storage options will be 8 or 16GB, both expandable via microSD slot. A 64-bit Intel Atom X3 system-on-a-chip, which comes with a 1GHz quad-core CPU and 1GB of RAM, will power the device and its preinstalled Android 5.0 Lollipop platform.
Like the assortments of ZenFone 2 that we have today, maybe all the tablet variants will be simply called the Asus ZenPad and tiered into different price ranges. We’ll probably learn more about the tablets in early June, which is the usual time frame for Computex computer expo in Taipei. Expected release date is sometime in July.
