Octa-core phones are overhyped. To be honest, the performance is pretty ho-hum when you pair a 1.7GHz MT6592 SoC with a Full HD screen. However, SKK Mobile has done something interesting with the popular octa-core chip, pairing it with a qHD screen instead to create the SKK Mobile Platinum Advance.

Why should this be seen as a good thing when there’s an obvious drop in resolution compared to the octa-core competition? Because a lower resolution means less load on the GPU and CPU, translating to faster frame rates and smoother gameplay. And in games, that can sometimes matter more than just having a better screen than anyone else.

Platinum Advance

Okay, so the frame rates are going to be smooth, but what about the actual onscreen image? Well, obviously it’s not going to be nearly as good. For a large, 5.5 inch screen, I would have recommended at least an HD screen since games would still run pretty well on an octa-core chip and look at least reasonably good.

But hey, if you’re going to let me use a smartphone that runs through NOVA 3 and the Modern Combat series, I’d be seriously impressed. And the SKK Mobile Platinum Advance retails for just Php8,999, which is pretty awesome considering you also get 1GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Of course, you can just add a little less than Php2k and get a Mi 3…
